Growing up in an Italian-American family meant growing up around food, good food, and lots of it.

We embraced the exclamation MANGIA! —which translates literally to eat!— as the signal to come together at the table and savor a shared meal; my mother would ensure this happened nightly. She would wait until after the family was served to serve herself, and watched as everyone took their first bite to see their reaction— then and only then would she begin her meal.
